Shadywood History

It all started with Brian Curtis, who started Shadywood Tree Experts when he was in his 20s, back in 1967. He followed in the footsteps of his dad Bill and older brother, Bill Jr., who owned Vet's Tree Service in Bloomington. Back then Shadywood headquarters was Brian's basement office in Minnetonka, and there was no such thing as a certified arborist.

Brian grew a successful company from scratch with no formal training in business, and for decades he divided his time between making estimates and climbing trees. What began in the 1960s as little more than Brian, a ragtag crew, and whatever equipment he could scrape together, is now one of the most well-respected tree companies in the Twin Cities.

Shadywood has always been a huge part of the Curtis family. Brian's wife Sid helped run the business for decades, and his three kids all learned the value of a hard day's work at Shadywood. If you were big enough to drag brush, rake yards, or make copies in the office, you helped out. After college and a year traveling abroad, Keith Curtis started back at Shadywood and learned the business, becoming an expert in in his own right. Today he's an ISA Certified Arborist.

Shadywood's new ownership (2017)

As Brian neared retirement, the question of Shadywood's future came into play. In January 2017 the company moved on to the next generation when Keith, his sister Kelli and brother-in-law Mike purchased the business together.
