PLANT HEALTH CARE TECHNICIAN

Shadywood Tree Experts in Hopkins, MN is looking to hire a full-time, Tree Health Care Technician / Tree Care Apprentice. This position is a full time position, year-round position with duties split between the Plant Health Care Department (PHC) and the Tree Pruning Department. 

The ideal candidate will perform PHC duties during the growing season and will work on the tree crew as an apprentice learning all aspects of tree crew operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Plant Health Care Technician Duties include:

  • Safely and accurately measure pesticides

  • Safely apply pesticides and fertilizers

  • Perform health care inspections

  • Interact with customers

  • Perform basic maintenance on the PCH truck(s) and equipment

Tree Crew Apprentice duties include:

  • Safely assist with tree care ground operations including hauling brush, raking, cleanup, and other assigned task.

  • Learn Tree Crew procedures and skills

The ideal candidate will be able to advance through Shadywood as new skills and certifications are earned. We provide complete training for all positions.

Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid drivers license

  • Must have or be able to obtain and maintain commercial pesticide applicator license within 4 weeks of being hired

  • Must have basic tree identification skills

  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions

  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs

  • Must be able to work independently, manage time and be an efficient production employee

  • Background in caring for residential and commercial properties is a plus

  • Diagnosing basic plant health issues is a plus. 

  • Basic equipment maintenance is a plus

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

The Equipment Operator is responsible to operate and maintain equipment required for assigned jobs. This position will also be responsible for ensuring that proper safety guidelines are followed at all times and report any safety concerns immediately. The Equipment Operator will ensure that the safety of the work area and everyone around the work area is not at risk. This position will report to the General Foreperson and Manager for the area.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Inspects and reports necessary repairs to tools, truck, and other equipment

  • Loads and unloads equipment onto trucks and trailers

  • Services equipment to keep it in clean, neat, and specified mechanical condition

  • Participates in daily job briefings and safety meetings

  • Operates heavy equipment of various types to remove branches and tree material from job sites

  • Operates and services equipment such as gasoline and hydraulic tools, power saws, power winches, mower decks, weed whackers, chippers, and sprayers

  • Safeguards employees and the public from hazards in and around work areas

  • Sets up barriers, warning signs, flags, and markers to protect employees and public

  • Trains new personnel

  • Works in all temperatures and will be exposed to nature, i.e. irritating plants and biting or stinging insects

  • Keeps informed on new equipment, specifications, standard practices, operating procedures, and customer and company employee relations policies and practices

  • Works near energized parts or equipment

  • Starts each workday with an inspection of tires, controls, fuel, and fluids to ensure reliable operation

  • Changes attachments, makes adjustments, verifies information and troubleshoots problems

  • Operates equipment manually and through use of electronic or technical methods of operation

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to wear and utilize PPE

  • Must be able to safely operate equipment and/or safely drive a vehicle

  • Must be able to operate all tools required on job site, or have the ability to learn tooperate them

  • Must be able to traverse uneven terrain

  • Must be able to enter and exit equipment/vehicles numerous times a day

  • Must be able to withstand exposure to elements throughout the year (heat, cold, rain, and other weather conditions)

  • Must have good vision and be attentive

  • Must be able to verbally communicate with other crew members and fully understand instructions and information

  • Must have transportation to and from the startup location

  • Must have a valid driver's license

GROUNDS CREW

Responsible for performing all required ground duties in support of specific job assignments as directed by crew leader or designated supervisor by performing the following duties.

Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Reports for duty at the designated location on time each day and is ready to leave for worksite.*

  • Follows directions from the crew leader or designated supervisor.*

  • Operates two handed equipment such as a chain saw or circular saw and has the physical ability to endure extreme climate variances.*

  • Loads and unloads trucks with logs, brush, and debris and feeds brush into brush chipper.*

  • Keeps work area picked up and orderly.*

  • Sprays stumps and debarks as needed.*

  • Drives and operates trucks and other equipment as assigned.*

  • Keeps trucks and other assigned equipment in a neat and orderly fashion.*

  • Reports the need for repairs to truck and equipment to crew leader.*

  • Follows on the job safety practices.*

  • Directs traffic and places orange cones in street to block off work are from traffic.*

  • Uses and maintains chainsaw safely.*

  • Assists climbers and crew leaders working on the ground and aloft.*
